Interview with Matthew Flynn, student teacher at Hammond High School
What is your name?
Matthew Flynn
What is your job?
Student Teacher
Where do you teach?
Hammond High School
How do the facilities look/operate?
Hammond has access to chromebooks by reservation, classrooms are still primarily using chalkboards and basic overhead projectors. The classrooms have standard desks that have clearly seen usage, 10 years old at least.
Are there any expectations or shortcomings of the students?
Students tend to take advantage of the rule allowing them to wear hoodies/hats, as well as using headphones and cell phones. Students struggle to stay attentive because of school policy allowing hoodies. Headphones, and phones on their person.
What is the stereotype associated with the school?
The school had a reputation for having fights on occasion, and there is a general stereotype that students largely originate from low-income households.
Do you see this stereotype in the school?
School data does indicate that a large portion (around 33%) of students receive SNAP program benefits (free/reduced lunch) and many students lack basic school materials like pencils and the required notebooks for classes.
Does the age of the school show?
The school does not look its age, possibly because of renovations over time. However, it is a single-story school which does contribute to making it look aged.
Are there any shortcomings that you feel comfortable talking about within the school?
My only observation of shortcomings in the school comes from how congested the hallways get between classes which contributes to the confusion and chaos of a building which already feels like a maze.
What are the positives of this school?
The school has beautiful murals that students design over the years which fills the building with character and color. The building also has strong school spirit messages throughout.
What is your favorite part of this school?
The murals are certainly a standout aspect of the school, and actually make navigating the building easier for new faces.
